Living with and loving: 12th house moon

If I can point to one way which astrology has enhanced my life and the lives of those around me, it has been through increasing my tolerance of others and my understanding of innate difference. This has been a truly helpful development for someone who had very firm attachment to the ideas of being right, and my way being therefore the most logical and favourable way of being.

Over the course of my life so far I have had the privilege to meet many people and learning their charts has been ever so helpful in quieting the voice inside my head which wanted to hit them over the head with mallets. Being able to sit comfortably with difference is a challenge, and one I've nowhere near sussed but the Living With and Loving Posts will be a log of my attempts to do so.

Thus, on the subject of 12th house moons...

In astrology the Moon represents our emotional and instinctive self. Where the Moon falls in our chart (by sign, house and aspect) describes something about our primal, innermost self: our hungers, our needs, how and where we seek security.

The 12th house describes the unconscious, the hidden. It is the vastest, and the most mysterious of astrological houses. Trying to see its contents is as useless and as dangerous as trying to discern how deep the ocean by looking at its surface. The only way to experience the 12th house is to sink into it with eyes closed, using intuition and sideways senses and allowing its contents to rise up and meet you, like the distant ancestoral memories we carry unaware most often of the voices which sing in our blood, whisper in our bones.

The 12th house obscures whatever it contains, and its contents are not easily reachable. Attempting to grab a part of us that it's in the 12th is very much similar to fishing - direction and depth are illusory, things slip from our grasps, float to us in their own time, of their own accord.

On the subject of how to spot a 12th house moon, astrologer Alexander von Schlieffen gives a deeply helpful definition; namely that with a 12th house moon person their needs are hidden, elusive, both from themselves and others around them.

I verified the truth of that when I met my husband.

Although his Moon is in the fire sign of Aries (the warrior, the hero; the bearer of courage, arrogance, drive, aggression) and trine a fiery Sun in Sagittarius, its placement in the 12th house obscures everything. While this has its benefits for my rather sensitive nature (he is not aggressive, he doesn't yell) in most aspects it's taken a lot of adjustment (my own Moon is in the 3rd house of ideas and communication, my own needs and emotions are easily verbalisable and plain and obvious to me).

So, here's a list of useless questions to ask a 12th house Moon (unless you are looking for an excuse to work yourself into a froth of frustration):

How do you feel? ("Don't know, can't put it into words.")

What are your needs? (A wide-handed shrug that equates needs to vastness and unquantifiability of the sea; "I don't know")

What do you want? ("I don't know"; "What do you want?")

Can you remember how you felt about that? ("I don't know how to put it into words"; "I cannot find the words to explain how I feel about you either, words are so inadequate, I just feel".)

What are your boundaries? ("I don't know, but when you cross them we'll both know.")

What makes you happy? ("When you're happy.")

In short, a recipe for insanity if you're looking for any kind of a straight answer.

A recipe for suspicion or interest too, if you happen to have a probing Scorpio Moon intrigued by the fact that your normally very keen sense about other people (what makes them tick, where they shine, where they are vulnerable, what they're feeling) is being completely eluded by a 12th house moon person who is ephemeral, keeps slipping away. It takes a different tactic to catch this fish.

You must use patience, and subtlety. Enter its world. Wait with no probing questions, no sudden movements. Move with eyes closed, or using only peripheral vision. Do not startle, do not rush. Gather what information is given and wait for more, wait until the fish swims closer, reveals itself to you. And when the fish comes to you do not frighten it, do not violate its trust by grasping it and hurting it. Respect what you are shown, and honoured with. Swim in its own world, drift with it.

It has taken me three years (and some Pluto transits) to see my husband's naked core, his raw emotions. To be trusted with his secret self. And the experience was all the more special for the waiting.

Nice to know. I just started dating a Scorpio with moon in cancer in the 12th house. I am a Virgo with moon in taurus in the 12th house. A few weeks ago, we just stopped calling each other. For an entire week and a half! Finally, he texted me, "Are you not talking to me?"... Um, the phone works both ways right? But, it seems he sent me a text and I didn't receive it, so it was never answered and neither of us picked up the phone, we just dropped it off there... Well, we picked things back up where we left them, and it's going great... I guess, I'll have to remember what happened if I don't hear from him for a few days again, and give him a call...?

Hello,
My moon is in the 12th as well. I loved your description of this placement. It was beautiful, I'm saving it. You're husband is lucky to have such a loving and understanding person by his side!

The man that I love has moon in scorpio and like you probes me with his questions. I take time to reveal myself. It's not intentional witholding or deceit. I'm just very shy, sensitive. Deep down i'm easily hurt. Feelings are very precious and sacred to me. One of the reasons I love this man is because unlike others he wants to know what's going on with me, and asks me those questions that you listed up there.I don't give an answer aloud because I'm afraid but say it inside silently when he asks me. Deep inside I like the probing because it shows that he cares, he wants to know about me. Inside I feel flattered, even though I never say it. Sometimes people think i'm distant and misunderstand me. Previous men didn't care or bother to ask. Maybe they weren't aware of how much passion and love a 12th house moon hides because we conceil it. I will reveal the full scale of my emotions to this man in time little by little when i feel totally safe with him.
Moon in the 12th house is often associated with unloving mother(moon). It's malefic, afflicted moon. It is true my mother never loved me because of her own issues and bad marriage, but kids think that parents are there for them any time. Only when I grew up I realized she didn't, she actually sabotaged me in many areas. But again children don't expect but full trust and unconditional support from their parents. This is why I think I'm withdrawn. but 12th house people deep down are dying to open the gates of their own universal spiritual love. This is one more reason why I love this man, because slowly I am trusting him and starting to open up, to him of course.

Truly inspiring...I have a 12th house moon and I could so relate to the useless questions. I just don't know. It's all so much bigger than me. I also had a mother who couldn't love me or nurture me and while its not the end all be all of my life, it does explain some things.

I loved the article! It took me years of reading astrology books to understand my 12th house Moon in Leo (still learning about it though :)

It takes a lot of care and warmth from the environment for a 12th house Moon to open up and feel secure.

I have a 12th house moon in aries and it is in the realm of the unconsious and its shifting sands where I feel comfortable, safe and at peace. With aries in the 12th house, this 'zone' is protected from unwelcome visitors in true warrior spirit - often to the surprise and disbelief of those dumb enough to test the waters disrespectfully. On a more solemn note, the spiritual realms are tread fearlessly and vigorously.

Wow! You just totally described me! I have moon in cancer in the 12th. oddly enough i was pursued by a heavy scorpio person, sun, moon, venus, mer, jupiter in scorpio. When i was reading the question and answer part I thought.. 'wow, this is exactly how I sound, esp when my scorpio guy is asking me a billion questions.' He always tells me that i am not aloud to say 'i dont know' anymore! I thought to my self that i should send this to him! I also have sun in pisces as well as merc in pisces, so this is me to the extreme!

Oh i wanted to add that my sun and merc in pisces is in the 8th house, and i have pluto in scorpio in the 4th..

well ive got a guy in my life with this 12th house position and im trying to read as much as possible on it, cuz i really dont understand it !?! i mean i know and i feel that he is in love with me , but he does nothing about it ! and when i try to push it, it goes 2 steps back, really 12 steps backwards as far as forward progress to get him to bind with me. im thinking of just moving away cuz now i live in dissapointment here that ill always be alone in love here. and life being short as it may, ill go back to ny or elsewhere it seems love takes too long if ever to congeal in this island by cuba, others give this same complaint of men here.but the long terrm mooon wait fish analogy was quiet poetic and profound, certainly worth a reconsider, but at least u were married marriage implies hope, wheres my hope when nothing is being done by gesture on his part to concretize things????? his taurus sun/venus are also in my fifth house if anyone interested in input/suggestion comments for as to how i should proceed

Your advices struck a chord on me! I'm a third house Cancer sun, seventh house libra moon, venus in gemini in the 3rd and for me it seems the natural path of feelings are to be communicated. However, I date a Scorpio 4th house Sun, 12th house Cancer Moon and my all around inquisitive and curious ways get frustrated when it is about making him speak about what he feels. Wow, now I understand him so much better! Thanks.

Anonymous said...

When I was a kid I didn't speak for 2 years.I thought to myself who are these people(my Family)all fire signs. It was like they were speaking a foreign language. My mother got my ears checked and hid my pacifier.I found it again every time, because I knew her better than she knew me. She did everything except talk to me.I'm a virgo 12th house aquarius moon.I'm glad I lived with such forceful people they got me to be forceful too.And you're right for some weird reason we need to be reminded that you care and that we can trust you so we can keep talking to you otherwise we just keep to ourselves.

wow - so beautifully said. i have 12th house cancer sun and 4th house scorpio moon and can totally relate. only men who can handle or 'see' me are those with scorpio energy who 'approach' me in the manner you described. it's taken many years of therapy and failed relationships to honor this. have a wonderful marriage, you two are soul mates.

I agree with what most everyone has been saying...I'm a female cappy sun with a moon in my 12th house....and it's in cancer. I've just recently started reading about astrology.

The combination of the capricorn aloofness, and with the 12th moon not tending to verbalize what we want...in this case cancerian emotionality, has been hard to deal with as a woman.

Guys generally have no idea how to go about cracking my tough capricorn shell, and when they finally do, then hit the whirling misty 12th moon vulnerability about my emotions, they generally don't know what to do from there. Surprise surprise, it's been a scorpio sun who actually managed to get past that the first time.

I wish that more people understood this, as I have a lot of sagittarius-lover traits, and really DO want that cancerian closeness. I
m glad you could verbalize it for those of us who can't haha

I probably shouldn't but i take it to offense that the moon in 12th house usually means the mom wasn't such a good mom or there were just problems in general with that relationship. I am reading this because I am concerned about my 17 month old son's chart. Between this placement with his libra moon in 12th house and his venus oppposite saturn (that also says mom probably didn't know how to love you or give you self confidence) I am at a loss. I feel like I have been dubbed a bad mom before I had a chance. I love my baby he is the light of my life! Please someone with these aspects or placements tell me this is not true. His sun is capricorn, moon libra, venus pisces, saturn virgo. My sun is aquarius, moon leo, venus aries, saturn scorpio. Help!

It's great you wrote this!
So true, I never knew how I felt or wanted in life.
I've been looking for moon in the 12th house people!
I'm a moon in Taurus, sun in Libra.
VERY PEACEFUL! YES?

My Leo mom has been nagging at me forever, I always felt ugly when I was a kid. She criticized me every day. Of course I wasn't!

It's like she doesn't want to grant me freedom with obscure reasons.

That's why I've always felt happier away from home . . .

I don't think you'll be a bad mother.

My mom has just been overprotective and overcritical.

Everything she's doing is for my own good. She loves me. But most of the time she's taking away my freedom and hurts me unconsciously.

You'll be a great mom :)

This is a really beautiful post. I can't really explain how it made me feel...

Understood.

I have Scorpio Moon in the 12th house and hope to find someone who is as patient as you are at uncovering the mysteries.

Your hubby is lucky.

Hey anonymous that said this:

Here's my response: I am Sun in Aquarius, Libra Moon in the 12th house, Venus in Aquarius and Saturn in opposite sign of Leo. You wanted confirmation of motherly love and self confidence... well I had it. In fact that's the only part I don't relate to with this blog. I totally never felt like my mother didn't love me enough or provide me with the tools for self-confidence. Quite the opposite actually... most times I felt like she was 'too involved'. Probing questions, etc. I look to her South Node in Leo for her controlling default patterns. I honestly don't think if you were loved or unloved has anything to with it. I still can relate to this 100%. And don't ask me how I actually feel about this post cause I really don't know.

hi
a soul come into this world seeking to experience and transcend the chart, hopefully, in the course of a life time. It is not necessary that you`ll be bad mother, the chart will indicate the experience that your son might have of receiving love. At times, at that age, I believe his perception is very subtle. Example: the bond is so strong that you do not need to act "bad", he might just sense you are stressed out, a little bit cold and that is his perception etc
But his venus is exalted in Pisces, and this is very important detail that you should add to the picture as there is a lot of love there. Also, what is the orb? what houses does venus rule?

It is the usual question of fate/vs free will: you are born with that chart and the awareness you have of yourself will help you out overcoming or evolving into a more complete individual. I have a 12 house libra moon, conjunct uranus square saturn - 25 minutes orb - and my mom loved me dearly - there are issue there but I cannot absolutely say she is a bad mom, actually possibly, she is one of the best mom I could ever asked for.

I am fairly new to astrology. Learning how to navigate my own challenges is my inspiration for learning.

I found this article while researching my very own moon in the 12th.

I am a 12th house moon Aries and with a slew of planets currently transiting Aries, I have been feeling the energies pulling in every direction.

The article was very insightful. I could relate to many of the comments as well.

In past relationships, I have found it most frustrating when a partner probes me with questions. It almost felt intrusive...as if there was a lack of trust. I have learned that this is in fact not the case. Although I perceive myself as outwardly emotional, I have learned that others do not share in my opinion.

There was one particular comment by an anonymous poster which struck a chord. She says, "...but 12th house people deep down are dying to open the gates of their own universal spiritual love." I think this describes me completely.

I too had a mother who was not as nurturing and loving as I needed. And, that has infact put a strain on our relationship. But, it has also made me aware of the need of my own child for it is not important to give what I feel is "enough" love, as it is to ensure that she is receiving what she NEEDS from me. For me it's all about perception.

The current Aries transits of Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Uranus (all of which are touching my moon) are awakening in me emotions that I believe have been dormant. I know there are lessons to be learned here although what they are still eludes me.

Hi,
I have Cancer Moon in 12th House. One thing I like about having moon in 12th house is that I don't get depressed if I am lonely. Also my imagination runs wilder than anyone else's I know and I can entertain myself for hours without seeing other people or spending any money and I am very good at keeping secrets. Mind my other 4 planets are all in 1st house Leo. :)

I relate so well to this article. And to the comments. I have often wondered if this placement, moon in the 12th house is one of the most sensitive. I love the depth and I feel there is a strong self in 12 house moon people. Even when self undoing is a recurrent theme.
Here's a poem of Charles Bukowski who has moon in the 12th house. One of my personal favorites.

The laughing heart:
your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
